Age defying style

I have a definite opinion when it come to appearance as you get older.

As women get older it is my experience that they fall into the following ruts:

The “I don’t know how to dress as my body changes” rut.

The “Everything in the stores is for the young generation” rut

The “I really have no reason to get dressed up” rut or

The “I just want to be comfortable” rut.

All of the above may be true and valid but that is no reason not to look fabulous.  There is nothing better than an older woman with a great sense of personal style and confidence and there is nothing worse than a woman, who, by way of her appearance is not accepting the fact that she is no longer a teenager.

Presenting yourself in the best way possible as you age has many benefits. It  is not just about looking good, its about feeling good about who you are and who you have become and having the kind of confidence you get from knowing you look fabulous.

I have hosted numerous fashion shows that include mother and daughter wearing the same outfit and both looking stunning.  How is that possible you may ask.  Well, ladies, it not always about what you wear but about how you wear it. You do not have to completely change a mode of dressing that you have been comfortable with for decades but you do have to change how you wear it and put it together.  Here are some tips to get you started.

Style Tips for Age Defying Style:

Trends:  Getting caught up in a trend is one of the worst things you can do at any age.  If the trend does not look good on you or work for your body it is not for you!  Have the confidence to say ‘No’ and wear what works for your body, your personality, your lifestyle and your budget.

Skirts and Dresses:  Take skirt lengths a little longer for a more elegant look.  Mid Knee is the perfect length. Let go of the idea that you have to show more leg because that is one of your best assets.

Skin Bearing Tops: Where you once wore the spaghetti strap tops bearing your toned arms now is a time to re think how to wear it.  I will always consider the spaghetti strap top a wardrobe staple but now is the time to consider a stylish coverup like a thin knit cardigan to the waist or a form fitting sweater with a great neckline or a great jacket over your spaghetti strap tank.

Tight Clothes:   It used to be the tighter the better.  Now that will only get you the wrong kind of attention.  While I am an advocate of form fitting clothes make sure that they are not so tight that I can tell the brand name of your underwear!  Scary as it may seem it is OK to go a size up.  And ladies please do not give up your sense of well being to a number on a size tag.

Shoes:  There are some pretty wild shoes out there these days.  Chiropractors must be making a mint as I do not  know how women can walk in 6 inch heels and platforms all day long  without some back issues.    That being said I would go for more classic looking shoes over trendy.  Think of a ballet flat or an elegant pump or a great flat ankle boot for pants and a flat knee book for skirts.
